Craig Nutt

15. Helical Dance

Artist Craig Nutt creates fine works in wood on many themes, including the molecular. Included in the show is a detail from "Helical Dance", a large sculpture created for the Schering-Plough Research Institute in Alabama.

Ribbon models, such as "Helical Dance", are used by scientists to show the three-dimensional structure of a protein chain. But, as Craig Nutt describes, they have other possibilities: "I wanted to make the sculpture something more than a molecular model. Technology is intimidating to many people because they have no frame of reference, no personal model to help them understand. The molecular model suggested to me something you might see growing in a garden or at the roadside, such as grape or kudzu vines, providing a frame of reference to people unfamiliar with molecular structure." The sculpture is based on the structure of human gamma-interferon. The helix is created from 15 layers of laminated wood veneer.
