24. Immune Recognition
"Immune Recognition" depicts a battle in the bloodstream between
molecules of the immune system and two invaders. The
invaders are shown in green: a small, round virus on the
right, and part of a large bacterial cell on the left. Small
Y-shaped antibodies have bound to the virus, targeting it for
destruction by white blood cells. Molecules in the blood
plasma, colored bright magenta, have punctured a hole
through the bacterial cell wall. The artwork was created
based on experimental results from many laboratories,
including hundreds of molecular structures, the
concentrations of molecules in blood plasma and in
bacteria, and electron micrographs of bacterial cells.
