I would like to color the 'backbone' portion of the DNA molecule one color while maintaining the coloration of the 4 different bases. Is it possible to separate the bases from the backbone for coloring purposes? Basically I want the final output to be colored like this representation

any suggestions as to how I would go about doing this? Thanks!

HI there,

yes you can.
if you read a pdb file of a DNA molecule and display them as ribbon or beadedRibbon you will have separate geometry for the chain and the base. So you can use the host to change the material.
